London, 16 August 2013: Stephen Hammond, MP for Wimbledon and Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Transport, has visited TNT Post UK’s new delivery unit in Wimbledon to meet with some of the 65 Posties who have been recruited as the company extends its mail delivery service to South West London.
Opened in June of this year, Wimbledon is one of the six new TNT Post delivery units in the South West London area, operating to provide a new household and business delivery service. A total of 500 new jobs have been created in June, with many new workers previously being long term unemployed and found through the Government’s Work Programme, Remploy and local job centres.
During his visit, Stephen was able to join a local Postie on his delivery round, where he was shown the new technology TNT Post is using to increase delivery efficiency in South West London. Unique to the company, each letter delivered is scanned before being posted through the letterbox.
Since the company began its mail delivery trial in London last year, TNT Post has created 1,000 jobs and has shown its commitment to tackling youth and long-term unemployment. The company plans to extend its delivery service across the UK in the next five years, creating 20,000 jobs in the process.
Following the visit, Stephen Hammond MP, said:
“It is very rewarding to see constituents gain employment as TNT Posties. The company has shown its commitment to tackling unemployment in the local area, and it was interesting to hear the stories from Posties who were previously struggling to find jobs.”
Nick Wells, CEO TNT Post UK, commented:
“TNT Post was delighted that Mr Hammond came to visit our new delivery unit in Wimbledon and to meet our latest recruits. The Posties really enjoyed meeting with their local MP and demonstrating our state-of-the-art tracking service for mail that we are using in SW London. We are pleased that we have been able to help people who have been unemployed and especially those under 25 who can now hopefully create a career at TNT Post.”
