Kate Green MP meets new Posties in Flixton
24/04/2014
Kate Green, MP for Stretford and Urmston, visited TNT Post UK’s new delivery unit on Woodsend Road, Flixton, to meet some of the 90 local Posties who have been recruited to the company.
The new delivery staff are part of the 1,000 new recruits to TNT Post in Greater Manchester announced late last year.
The Flixton Delivery Unit is one of 11 TNT Post-delivery units in the Greater Manchester area, and is the second in Kate Green’s constituency, the other unit being on the Longford Trading Estate, Stretford.
At the delivery units, staff check the mail and then sequence the mail in order of delivery. The Posties then deliver by bike or on foot to households and businesses in the local area.
Many of the new Posties were long term unemployed before taking up work with TNT Post and during the recruitment phase the company focussed on targeting young unemployed people to fulfil the new roles.
During the visit, Kate was able to learn about TNT Post’s learning and development programmes for the new employees, and was shown the new technology TNT Post is using to increase delivery efficiency. Unique to the company, each letter delivered is scanned before being posted through the letterbox. Since the company began its mail delivery trial in London last year, TNT Post has created 3,000 jobs and recently began operations in Liverpool. The company plans to extend its delivery service across the UK over the next five years, creating 20,000 jobs in the process.
Kate said: “I was delighted to visit the TNT Post delivery unit in Flixton and chat with some of the staff.
“I am very pleased that TNT Post in opening the two delivery offices has been committed to providing jobs for local residents.
“The staff I met told me how keen they were to find work and were pleased they’ve been able to increase their hours as the business grows.”
Nick Wells, CEO TNT Post UK, commented:
“Our Posties really enjoyed meeting with Ms Green and talking about their new roles and how they use the track and trace technology.
“We are proud to have created 90 new jobs in the Flixton area, part of the overall 1,000 jobs created in Greater Manchester since November last year.”
