• Starting with 400 jobs in North West London and Harrow
  • The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson welcomes news

TNT Post, the UK’s second largest private postal operator and main competitor to Royal Mail, has announced that it is to double the size of its London workforce, starting with the hiring of 400 Posties in Camden, Willesden, Colindale and Harrow.

The announcement will mark the start of TNT Post’s plans to double its London workforce to 2000 Posties.  Currently it operates a mail delivery service to businesses and consumers in Central, West and South West London from 12 delivery units.  This phase of expansion will see the opening of four new delivery units in North West London and Harrow.

During the recruitment phase, TNT Post has focused on creating opportunities for the youth and long term unemployed. The flexibility of the roles has made them particularly appealing for local residents, including women returning to work, second jobbers, those balancing childcare commitments and school/college leavers.

The company runs its own Pre- Employment Training course which establishes a candidate’s suitability for the role and has worked with Job Centre Plus and Ingeus in North West London to fulfil the roles.

The delivery service operates alongside the traditional Royal Mail postal delivery service but the TNT Post Postie will complete their deliveries using bicycles.  In addition, for the first time, every letter is scanned, with a track and trace service to the door.

Posties who joined TNT Post in April 2012 have seen many opportunities for career development including the new Delivery Manager in North West London, Mike Rigby, who was unemployed when he joined the company and has gone from trainee Postie to running his own team of over 400 in less than two years.

Mike commented: “In two years I have learnt so much and enjoyed the challenges and opportunities that being a Postie at TNT Post offers.  I am really looking forward to working back in North London, where I live, amongst my friends and family.  The expansion into new areas means others will have the opportunities I have had and I can’t wait to get cracking with our new Posties”.

TNT Post further expanded its delivery service in November into Manchester and has plans to create 20,000 jobs across the UK over five years.

The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, said:
“London is the finest location in the world to live, work and do business, and I am very pleased to learn that TNT Post are set to double their workforce in our great city. I am particularly pleased to hear that their new posties will rely solely on pedal power to deliver their letters and look forward to seeing them on the streets of the capital.”

Nick Wells, CEO TNT Post said:
“We are passionate about creating jobs.  These jobs have been filled by people who may have found it difficult to get back into, or even join, the work force.  These jobs are not only good news for North West London and Harrow but are also good news for the UK economy.

We are committed to helping develop people’s careers and our focus on training and development will not only benefit TNT Post employees, such as Mike, but also the wider business community as our Posties progress their career with us or look for new opportunities within other businesses.”
